“KICKED: no valid heartbeat within window.”

Kicked mid-match with “no valid heartbeat within window”? Team17's one suggested step, why Linux players hit it, and what nobody has explained.

THE STRING

KICKED: no valid heartbeat within window.

Every other string in this section stops you getting in. This one throws you out of a match you are already playing. The earliest public report located is a Report a Problem thread opened at 05:43 UTC on 20 September 2026 and titled with the message itself: “Game runs perfectly however, I keep getting “KICKED: no valid heartbeat within window”.” The player guessed at the anti-cheat. Five hours later a second thread, also titled with the message, described being kicked on an SA official server while waiting out lag so heavy they could not walk, with the red packet-loss icon showing. Two dated reports on one day, from two different situations, is what establishes the string. It establishes nothing about the cause.

Team17's one suggested step: check Elytra's certificate

Publisher stated

Six minutes after the first report, Team17_Help — an account Steam flags [developer] — replied with a single procedure. It is a check on the digital signature of the anti-cheat's installer, which ships in the game's Elytra subfolder, and it ends with waiting until Windows reports the certificate as OK. The reply does not say what the certificate has to do with the kick, and it is a support suggestion to one player rather than a diagnosis. Two days later another player reported that it half worked: “it allows me to join games now but then kicks me between 20 seconds to a minute for no vaild heartbeat.” Team17_Assist [developer] asked them for any error messages. No further answer had been posted when this page was written.

#Team17's steps, 20 September 2026
1Open the game's install folder and go into the Elytra subfolder
2Right-click Elytra-Setup.exe and choose Properties
3Go to the Digital Signatures tab
4Select the signature in the list, then click Details
5Click View Certificate
6Open the Certification Path tab
7Wait until the status reads “This certificate is OK.”
8Close all the dialogs and relaunch the game

On Linux, Team17's answer is that it is not supported

Publisher stated

The same thread filled with players on Linux: one on Bazzite with Proton Experimental, another pointing out that there is no Digital Signatures tab to click on Linux. At 21:00 UTC Team17_Service [developer] answered both: “Currently WARDOGS it's not supported for Linux, we can't provide any recommendations at the moment.” That matches Team17's answer on the “Missing game executable” page and Valve's Unsupported rating for Steam Deck. A player in the thread goes further and says the heartbeat relies on a kernel-level feature Linux does not have. That is a player's explanation, and nothing official confirms or denies it.

When the network is already failing

Unverified

The second report is a different situation: an SA official server so laggy that “everyone” was complaining, with the red packet-loss indicator on screen, and the kick arriving while the player sat in cover. The only reply is another player's guess that the server sent a check and heard nothing back. That fits the words of the message, but it is a guess. If you see the packet-loss icon before the kick, the network-symbol page explains what each colour has been reported to mean.

Not the same as the heartbeat.dll crash, or the join timeout

Unverified

Two neighbouring failures get confused with this one, and the difference decides which page helps you. If the game closes with no message at all a few seconds after you join, that is a crash of the Elytra anti-cheat service. Players have traced it in Windows Event Viewer to an illegal instruction inside a file called heartbeat.dll, on 19 and again on 20 September. If you never get into the match, or are dropped the moment you arrive with a timeout, that is 1628505091. The launch hotfix of 10 September named “unexpected kicks” among the problems it addressed, but printed no message, so nothing ties that notice to this string.

What is not established

Unverified

Nobody at BULKHEAD or Team17 has said what the heartbeat is, how long the window is, or what makes one invalid. Nobody has said why an installer certificate check would affect it, or whether the one follow-up report that it only half worked is typical. Nobody has published how often it happens. There is also no published rule for kicks of any other kind: no AFK timeout, no vote kick, no team-kill kick. So a kick that shows a different message, or none, is not explained by this page. What you can do is narrow: Team17's certificate step on Windows, the network icon if lag came first, and the knowledge that on Linux there is no supported fix.

Common questions

What does “KICKED: no valid heartbeat within window” mean in WARDOGS?

That the game ended your session because a periodic check did not arrive in time. That much is in the wording; what the check is, and what sends it, has not been published by BULKHEAD or Team17. The first public reports date from 20 September 2026: one from a player whose game otherwise ran perfectly, one from a player on a badly lagging SA server.

How do you fix “no valid heartbeat within window”?

Team17 support suggested one step on 20 September 2026: in the game's Elytra subfolder, open Elytra-Setup.exe's Properties, go to Digital Signatures, open the certificate, and wait on the Certification Path tab until it reads “This certificate is OK.”, then relaunch. It is a suggestion, not a diagnosis. One player reported it let them join but they were still kicked within a minute.

Why do I get kicked with no valid heartbeat on Linux or Steam Deck?

Team17 support answered this in the same thread: “Currently WARDOGS it's not supported for Linux, we can't provide any recommendations at the moment.” On Linux or through Proton there is no supported fix, and Valve rates WARDOGS Unsupported on Steam Deck.

Does WARDOGS kick you for being AFK?

Nothing published says so either way. BULKHEAD and Team17 have described no AFK timeout, vote kick or team-kill kick, so this page cannot tell you how long you can stand still. The heartbeat message is the only kick with a dated public report quoting it.

Is “no valid heartbeat” a ban?

Nothing in the reports or in Team17's replies treats it as one. The player who tried Team17's step was able to join matches again afterwards, and was kicked from them. Bans are a separate subject with their own official statements.

Steam · ““KICKED: no valid heartbeat within window.” What?”, WARDOGS discussions, 20 September 2026Opened 2026-09-20 10:20 UTC. The cited phrase is the OP's own: “I was playing on SA official servers, couldn't not walk because it was extremely laggy ‘red packet loss icon on top right’”. It is the only located report that gives the indicator a third colour — red — and it independently repeats both the position (top right) and the label (packet loss) the 16 September thread gives. One player's description of their own screen; no threshold, and no statement that red means anything specific.Unverified2026-09-21
Steam · “Bug: Elytra anti-cheat crashes ~5 seconds after connecting to a server (Illegal Instruction, heartbeat.dll)”, WARDOGS Report a Problem, 20 September 2026Opened 2026-09-20 18:05 UTC on an Intel Core i7-14700F with an RTX 4070 Super under Windows. The Elytra service crashes a few seconds after joining any server and kills the game with no in-game error message; the player traced it in Windows Event Viewer to an illegal CPU instruction in heartbeat.dll. Cited to separate that crash from the kick message, which a different set of players reports seeing on screen. No replies at the 25 September read.Unverified2026-09-25
Steam · “Elytra service.exe crashes (0xc000001d in heartbeat.dll)”, WARDOGS discussions, 19 September 2026Opened 15:08 UTC. Windows Event Viewer IDs 1000 and 1005 with the anti-cheat service as the faulting application: C:\\Program Files\\Elytra\\service.exe, faulting module heartbeat.dll, exception 0xc000001d (STATUS_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION), at a constant fault offset the player says repeats identically. Named here because it is a crash of the anti-cheat service rather than of the game, which is a different failure from the DX12 pair — and because Elytra is the component the EULA addendum already puts in scope.Unverified2026-09-19
Steam · “Error “1628505091” Join Timeout”, WARDOGS discussions, 10 September 2026Opened 12:52:57 PDT, four minutes after the thread above, and titled with a different name for the same code: “Join Timeout”. Body: “keep on getting this error everytime I try to join a server or I get kicked as soon as i join.” Cited because the disagreement between the two titles is the thing this page is about, and because it adds the detail that the failure was also happening after a join, not only instead of one.Unverified2026-09-18
