Why did your friend not end up with you?
There is no party button, so one of you goes in first and the other follows through Steam. Flip a switch for the two things on your side that send a follow somewhere else.

Join Game follows you onto your server, your faction and your squad in one step, as long as there is room. Squadmates show gold on the minimap — that is how you check it worked.
Reported · 11 Sep 2026What BULKHEAD has actually said about squads
The shipped squad description comes from “WARDOGS — Top Questions” of 18 February 2026. Under SQUAD SIZES, the answer is “Unlimited!” followed by: “No friend is left behind. Squadding up provides additional UI, communication tools, and vehicle locking for better coordination.” That is three concrete things a squad gets and one thing it does not have — a published cap. The newer press-conference preview below describes what Season 02 adds, not a change to that limit.
Season 02 adds Squad Intent, not a friends queue
BULKHEAD’s 9 October press conference previews Squad Intent for Season 02: a leader can label an open squad by its purpose, with examples including building, attacking a FOB and welcoming new players. The studio says a true queue-with-friends flow needs substantially more work and is not in Season 02. It also says custom squad names were pulled because moderation and a profanity filter should not be rushed, so the automatically generated callsigns described below remain the current model.
Proximity chat is in, and you can build loudspeakers
The same announcement asks “PROXIMITY CHAT?” and answers “YES!” — “Proximity chat makes the sandbox 100% player-driven. Coordinate with teammates, chat with your squad, or even construct loudspeakers to blast faction propaganda at your enemies.” Two later posts corroborate that voice is a real, shipped system rather than a plan: the 11 August 2026 pre-order devlog names local VoIP among the topics it covers, and the Closed Beta 02 announcement of 1 September lists VOIP as one of the systems that beta existed to test at scale, alongside server scaling, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements and the login queue. A studio does not stress-test a feature it has not built.
If your voice chat stops working, Season 1 named the cause
This is the most useful thing on the page, because the query behind it is people whose microphone has gone silent mid-session. The Season 1 changelog of 9 September 2026 lists four voice changes, and the first is a specific, named failure rather than a general stability note — voice cutting out permanently after a failed join. If your voice died once and never came back in a build older than Season 1, that is the documented reason, and the fix is the update rather than anything you can do to your headset.
The full Season 1 changelog, including the server-browser changes →
| Season 1 voice change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Fixed voice cutting out permanently after a failed join | The known cause of voice dying for a whole session. A failed join used to leave you muted with no way back. |
| Stale channel rejoins, push-to-talk targeting and re-login all recover properly | Three separate paths that previously left the channel in a bad state. |
| Improved voice reliability under load | Aimed at the large-fight case, where 100 players share the space. |
| Added a visible communication status | There is now something on screen that tells you whether voice is working, instead of having to ask. |
How you invite someone: BULKHEAD has not published it
This is the single most-searched part of the whole topic and there is no official source for it. Searching every one of the 47 posts BULKHEAD has published for this game returns the word “invite” three times, and all three are about beta access — Closed Beta waves, the pre-order announcement, the beta schedule. Not one describes the in-game flow for adding a friend to your squad. The word “party” does not appear in the feed at all. Other shooters make the steps obvious enough to guess at, and guessing is exactly what this site does not do: a wrong menu path costs you more time than no menu path, because you go looking for a button that is not there. A dated first-hand walkthrough has since appeared, with video frames behind it, and the next section reports it for what it is: a community account, not a studio one.
How players report doing it: Esc, Create Squad, then Steam's Join Game
Two All Things How guides published on 11 September 2026, the day after Early Access opened, describe the same flow, and they build it on frames from two independent how-to videos rather than on a guess. There is no party or lobby button: the main menu offers DEPLOY, FIRING RANGE and LEARN TO PLAY and nothing else. So one of you goes in first. That player joins a server, picks a faction, presses Esc — the squad list lives on the Esc screen, not on Tab, which opens the inventory and scoreboard — and clicks CREATE SQUAD. The game names the squad itself with a NATO-style callsign such as LIMA-1. Everyone else then opens their Steam friends list, right-clicks that player and chooses Join Game, which is reported to drop them onto the same server, the same faction and the same squad in one step. Two things break it. A squad locked with its padlock icon shows REQUEST TO JOIN instead of JOIN SQUAD, so the leader either approves the request or invites the player from the unassigned players list. And each faction holds roughly a third of the server, so if yours is full the follower lands on another team and has to use CHANGE TEAM once a slot opens. You know it worked when your squadmates turn gold on the minimap.
Picking a server together, and when the browser comes back empty →
- 01
First player: join a server and pick a faction
Squads only exist inside one faction, so the faction choice is the one everybody else inherits.
- 02
Press Esc and click CREATE SQUAD
The squad list is on the Esc screen. Tab opens the inventory and scoreboard, which is where most people look first. The padlock makes the squad invite-only.
- 03
Everyone else: Steam friends list, right-click, Join Game
Reported to land you on the same server, faction and squad in one action, if the faction has room.
- 04
Check for gold
Squadmates show gold on the minimap and in the world. If a friend is the normal team colour, they are on your faction but not in your squad.
| On the Esc screen | What it is reported to do |
|---|---|
| CREATE SQUAD | Starts a squad with you as leader and an automatic callsign |
| JOIN SQUAD | Enters an open squad on your faction that has a free slot |
| REQUEST TO JOIN | Replaces JOIN SQUAD on a locked squad; the leader has to approve |
| Invite from unassigned players | How a leader pulls someone into a locked squad directly |
| LEAVE SQUAD | Returns you to unassigned |
| CHANGE TEAM | Moves you to another faction mid-match, if it has space |
Solo, clans and parties — three words the studio has never used
Worth stating plainly, because an absence in the feed is not the same as a feature being absent from the game, and the difference matters if you are deciding whether to buy. “Solo”, “clan” and “platoon” return zero matches across every published announcement. What that establishes is that no solo mode, clan system or platoon structure has been announced — not that you cannot queue alone. The mode as described puts 100 players across three teams whether or not you brought anyone, and squadding up is framed as something that adds UI and tools rather than something required to play.

If you cannot join your friend at all
A large share of what gets searched as a squad problem is not one. “Cannot join”, being dropped back to the main menu, and every server in the browser refusing a connection are failures of the connection or the client, and they have their own dated pages here. Try those first: if the game will not put you into any match, the squad is not the thing that is broken.

Text chat: Enter to open, Tab to change channel
BULKHEAD has not published a keybinding list, so this comes from a dated community guide and matches what players describe on Steam. In a match, Enter opens the text box. With the box open, Tab cycles the channel — the prompt reads CYCLE CHANNEL — through ALL, TEAM, SQUAD and LOCAL, and the one you stop on stays selected next time. Tab is also the inventory key, so open chat first or you will pull up your kit. The text channel does not change who hears your voice; voice runs on its own push-to-talk binds. If the box never appears, check the chat display option in settings and your Enter binding: a 17 September Steam thread describes exactly that failure, and Team17 staff acknowledged it there.

Common questions
Can you play WARDOGS with friends?
Yes. BULKHEAD's “Top Questions” announcement of 18 February 2026 says squadding up provides additional UI, communication tools and vehicle locking, and gives squad size as “Unlimited”. What it does not describe — and nothing else in the studio's feed describes either — is the in-game flow for sending the invite.
How many people can be in a WARDOGS squad?
There is no published cap. Under SQUAD SIZES the Top Questions announcement answers “Unlimited!” and adds “No friend is left behind.” A match holds 100 players split across three teams, so that is the practical ceiling on a single team's squad.
Can you queue into WARDOGS with friends?
Not through a new built-in group queue in Season 02. BULKHEAD says that flow needs substantially more work. Season 02 instead adds Squad Intent labels; the existing Steam Join Game route on this page remains a community-reported workaround, not an official menu guide.
How do you invite a friend to your squad in WARDOGS?
No official source describes it. All 47 of BULKHEAD's published announcements were searched on 2026-09-19: “invite” appears three times and every one is about beta access, not squads. This page will not print menu steps it cannot trace to a source. Two dated community guides do describe one — Esc, CREATE SQUAD, then Steam's Join Game — and the page reports it above, graded unverified.
Does WARDOGS have proximity chat?
Yes. The Top Questions announcement asks “PROXIMITY CHAT?” and answers “YES!”, describing it as making the sandbox 100% player-driven and naming buildable loudspeakers for broadcasting at enemies. VOIP was also one of the systems Closed Beta 02 was run to test at scale.
Why is my WARDOGS voice chat not working?
If it stopped and never came back, the Season 1 changelog of 9 September 2026 names the cause: voice could cut out permanently after a failed join. That release also fixed stale channel rejoins, push-to-talk targeting and re-login recovery, improved reliability under load, and added a visible communication status so you can see whether voice is up.
Can you play WARDOGS solo?
Nothing official addresses it. The word “solo” does not appear anywhere in BULKHEAD's published announcements. The mode as described is 100 players across three teams regardless of who you arrived with, and squadding up is presented as adding tools rather than as a requirement.
How do you open text chat in WARDOGS?
Press Enter in a match to open the text box, then Tab to cycle the ALL, TEAM, SQUAD and LOCAL channels, and Enter again to send. BULKHEAD has published no keybinding list; this is from a dated community guide that matches player reports. With the box closed, Tab opens the inventory.
Does WARDOGS have clans?
Not as anything announced. “Clan” and “platoon” return zero matches across every post BULKHEAD has published for the game. That is an absence of announcement, not a confirmation that no such system exists.
How do you play WARDOGS with friends?
There is no party button, so one of you goes in first: join a server, pick a faction, press Esc and click CREATE SQUAD. Your friends then right-click you in their Steam friends list and choose Join Game, which is reported to put them on your server, faction and squad at once if there is room. That is the flow two All Things How guides describe (11 September 2026); BULKHEAD has published none.
