The developer published its own reasons not to buy
This is unusual enough to be the most useful thing on the page. BULKHEAD’s pre-order announcement describes its own devlog as “10 Reasons why you should NOT Buy WARDOGS”, and says it covers “our early access strategy, stair stepped pricing and long-term monetisation plans among many other points such as local VoIP and gamepad support”. A second devlog followed on 8 September under the title “The 11th Reason NOT To Buy WARDOGS”, about anti-cheat. If you are deciding, start with the studio’s own case against the purchase and then read the one below.
“Stair stepped pricing” is the studio’s phrase, and it has no numbers
Steam makes every Early Access developer answer whether the price will change, and BULKHEAD’s answer is “Yes, we plan for WARDOGS to be priced lower during Early Access.” Its own pre-order post calls the shape “stair stepped pricing”. So a rise is confirmed in writing, twice, and the steps are still unpublished: the $49.99-then-$59.99 ladder appears in no official text we can find — its one named source is a 22 September GamesRadar+ interview with Joe Brammer, in the journalist’s paraphrase — and a $49.99 Supporter Edition sitting on the same store page is an easy thing to mistake for one.
The refund sentence, verbatim
From the same announcement: “we encourage you to try out the game and refund if the game doesn’t live up to your expectations.” Steam’s standard refund window applies, and the studio wrote that sentence about its own paid product twice — once for the closed beta and once for the game. If you are on the fence, that is a meaningful part of the answer.
The launch it actually had
It went badly and then it was fixed, and both halves belong in a buying decision. BULKHEAD’s launch recap says the queue let Steam login tickets expire, describes 100 login attempts a second against 10 succeeding, and says Hotfix #1 fetched a fresh ticket at the front of the queue, after which admission ran in 10,000-player waves until the queue reached zero. The same recap documents legitimate alpha testers being banned during the response. That video stated sales at 1.5 million; BULKHEAD’s latest Steam announcement says 3 million copies sold in just over two weeks.
What is unfinished, in the developer’s words
“The Early Access version of WARDOGS is fully playable and represents the core vision of the game”, and “the full version of WARDOGS is planned to be broader and more polished than the Early Access release.” BULKHEAD has also named a frontend metagame — Gold Exchange, Player Skills, Challenge System, Black Market and Vault — as a foundation designed and to be built across Early Access. Naming a system is not shipping it, and no official statement establishes whether progress carries to 1.0.
The parts of “is it good” this site will not fake
Whether it is fun is yours. Beyond that, several of the things a buyer reasonably wants are genuinely unpublished, and the sites that answer them are answering from numbers nobody has released: per-weapon damage, time-to-kill, a tier list, payout figures for the actions that earn cash, and any map or Control Zone place name. Our database says which fields are empty and why, which is a worse read and a better answer.
Two checks worth doing before you buy
Both are answerable in a minute and both are the kind of thing people discover afterwards. Steam lists Windows as the only native platform, so a Mac or a Linux desktop is a cloud-or-nothing decision today; and the interface is translated into 14 languages while the audio is English only, with the subtitles column empty.
- Compare your PC against the published specifications
- Check whether your language is covered, and whether that includes audio
Common questions
Is WARDOGS worth buying in Early Access?
That depends on how you feel about paying $39.99 for a build its developer expects to remain in Early Access for one to two years. BULKHEAD publishes its own reasons not to buy, says the price will rise later, and encourages refunds if the game does not live up to expectations. This site does not publish a score.
Is WARDOGS a finished game?
No. BULKHEAD says the Early Access build is fully playable and represents the core vision, with the full version planned to be broader and more polished. Several named metagame systems are still to be built during Early Access.
Will WARDOGS get cheaper?
No — the opposite. BULKHEAD’s Steam Early Access answer says it plans for WARDOGS to be priced lower during Early Access, and its own announcement calls the plan “stair stepped pricing”. The steps themselves are unpublished.
Can I refund WARDOGS?
Steam’s standard refund window applies, and BULKHEAD wrote that it encourages players to try the game and refund if it does not live up to their expectations.
How many people play WARDOGS?
The latest official sales announcement says 3 million copies sold in just over two weeks, which is not the number of players online. Dated concurrent-player snapshots are on the player-count page, with the difference explained.
Is the Supporter Edition worth the extra $10?
It adds three weapon camos, a helicopter camo, a scoreboard icon and two bobbleheads. No gameplay advantage, no early access, no progression. BULKHEAD frames it as supporting development rather than as value.
