SPOTTING

How spotting works in WARDOGS

How spotting works in WARDOGS: binoculars, monocular and IR rangefinder, marking enemies on the map, what a spot pays, and how a ghillie suit hides you.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Look at enemies through Binoculars ($75) or a Monocular ($150, Recon level 2) and they are marked for your team — players report the mark lands on anyone the optic passes over. Marked enemies show on the map, where hovering one shows its distance; middle mouse pings a spot. BULKHEAD says spotting pays cash. The IR Rangefinder is disabled until Season 02, when it returns needing batteries.

How you spot

Unverified

BULKHEAD has not published the mechanic, but players describe it consistently. Raise Binoculars or a Monocular and look across enemy positions: anyone the optic passes over gets marked for your team, whether or not you noticed them — a sniper complained on 9 October that an enemy “move[s] their binoculars past me” and marks him by accident. Marked enemies appear on the map. Hovering a spotted target on the map shows its distance, which is how mortar crews get range, and middle mouse (Ping) puts your own marker on a place.

The IR Rangefinder: pulled, and coming back on batteries

Publisher stated

On 2 October BULKHEAD disabled the IR Rangefinders in the vendor “until Season 02, where they will require batteries to use”, saying it agreed with player sentiment. Its Season 02 preview of 9 October confirms the Infrared Rangefinder “now runs on batteries”. Players had called it “thermals” and asked for exactly that: drills and defibrillators already run on the same Battery ($150) and High Capacity Battery ($300, WARDOG 45). How long a charge lasts has not been published.

What spotting pays

Unverified

BULKHEAD’s February Top Questions lists spotting among the teamplay actions that earn cash, and its launch-weekend totals counted 212.8 million spots and 65 million kills on spotted targets. It has published no rate. The wardogs.zone Field Manual (7 September, before launch) gives $100 for marking an enemy and $400 when a target you marked dies — $1,600 in the Hot Zone — scaled by server population. One player on 9 October claimed about $80,000 an hour “just spotting via recon”; that is one person’s estimate.

Hiding from spotters

Unverified

The ghillie suit is the counter the files describe — body and headwear together “hide the Player from Infrared Range Finders” and remove the death cam after you kill someone — but that is infrared only. Players on 9 October report that binoculars still mark a ghillied sniper the moment they sweep past, and one long-running complaint (28 September) is the sniper loop of spotting through bushes or smoke with binoculars, then shooting at the marker. BULKHEAD has not commented on either.

That spotting pays, the launch-weekend spot totals and the IR Rangefinder changes are BULKHEAD’s. Item prices, unlocks and in-game text are wardogs.zone’s extraction of the game files (read 6 October 2026); payout figures are its Field Manual, dated 7 September, before launch. How marking behaves is players’ accounts on the Steam board, 28 September to 9 October. The ping key is Shacknews’ PC keybind table.
