What engine WARDOGS runs on

WARDOGS runs on Unreal Engine 5 via BULKHEAD’s WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK. The studio’s own words, the 5.7.4 version in crash dumps, and what is not stated.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Unreal Engine 5. BULKHEAD says WARDOGS runs on its own “WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK”, which it describes as enhancing UE5 to handle 100-player warfare. The studio has not published an engine version; a player’s GPU crash dumps from the Early Access build record Unreal Engine 5.7.4.

Unreal Engine 5, with BULKHEAD’s own layer on top

Publisher stated

BULKHEAD answered the question itself in its February “Top Questions” post, under the heading “Game engine?”: “Our custom ‘WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK’ enhances UE5 to handle high-density 100-player All Out Warfare!” The same answer says the team is “heavily conscious of performance & input latency being a major factor in the feel of the game.” That is the whole of the studio’s statement: it names the engine and the framework, and does not list what the framework changes.

Which version of Unreal Engine 5

Unverified

BULKHEAD has not published one. The only public figure located is in a player’s crash report on the game’s Steam board, opened on 19 September: their GPU crash dumps name WARDOGS build 501228 and Unreal Engine 5.7.4. That is one machine, read by the player from their own dumps, and the build has been patched since — treat it as the version that build recorded, not a statement of what runs today. The report’s DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG errors also show the game running on DirectX 12.

Where the engine shows up in the settings

Publisher stated

The engine work BULKHEAD has written about in patch notes is performance work. Its Season 1 changelog of 9 September says DLSS Frame Generation “can now be turned off without restarting”, that the render target pool is configurable, that fewer shadow cache refreshes cut hitching when you take control of a character, and that two crash paths in the frame generation pipeline were fixed. The Steam requirements lean on upscaling the same way: the minimum tier targets “1080p Low @ 60fps (Upscaled)” and the recommended one “1440p Medium @ 70fps+ (Native) or 4k Medium @ 60fps+ (Upscaled)”.

What BULKHEAD has not said

Unverified

None of the game’s 32 Steam announcements names which Unreal Engine 5 systems WARDOGS uses — nothing about Nanite, Lumen or Chaos destruction, and no breakdown of the WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK beyond the one sentence above. Pages that state those as fact are guessing. The destruction and building the game does have are documented on their own page from what BULKHEAD has shown.

Can you edit Engine.ini in WARDOGS?

Publisher stated

Unreal Engine games keep config files such as Engine.ini, and players ask whether tweaking WARDOGS’s is safe. No BULKHEAD or Team17 text names Engine.ini or any .ini file — not the enforcement page, the safety page, the EULA, any Steam announcement through 14 October, or the studio’s videos. What the enforcement page does list among bannable offences is “Modifying, tampering with, patching or repackaging the game's files, executable or memory, or running tools that do so while the game is running”, and it adds: “Anything that involves altering the game’s files or your machine’s memory to obtain content or an advantage is cheating”. Whether a config override counts as “the game’s files” is not stated in either direction. The nearest thing to an answer is spoken: asked in the 9 October press conference about players “turning off shadows in the game files”, the developer replied, “it's stuff we're working on.” And BULKHEAD’s own settings already refuse to let shadows go fully off — the Season 1 changelog says “Shadow quality is now clamped to Low on high benchmark scores rather than being switched off entirely.” This page will not tell you an Engine.ini edit is safe, and will not tell you one is bannable.

  • Not established: whether the anti-cheat reads config files in your user folder at all.
  • Not established: whether anyone has been banned for an Engine.ini edit specifically.
  • Not established: whether any Engine.ini tweak improves frame rate in WARDOGS — no source tested one.
