Why is my magazine still empty?

The magazine-versus-loose-ammunition distinction that catches new players, and an honest account of how little of it is officially documented.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Because swapping a magazine is not the same as filling one. In the beta this was reported to work the way it does in milsim shooters — a magazine keeps whatever rounds are left in it — so cycling through spares gives you what you already had. Nothing about this is documented by BULKHEAD.

Read this before the rest of the page

Unverified

BULKHEAD has not documented reloading anywhere. No official page, announcement or devlog text describes magazines, loose ammunition, repacking or the inventory. Everything below was reported by players during a beta weekend, and a beta build is not a launch build. We are publishing it because it is the most common question new players ask and the honest answer is more useful than silence — but it is a lead, not a fact, and this page will be rewritten against the launch build.

The distinction that catches people

Unverified

As reported: a magazine carries its own count of remaining rounds, and swapping to a spare gives you that spare’s contents rather than a full one. Fire twenty rounds, swap, and you get whatever the next magazine happens to hold. This is the milsim convention rather than the arcade one, and it is the single reason a new player stands in cover pressing reload and stays empty. Loose ammunition and filled magazines are described as separate things that occupy space separately.

Repacking is reported to take real time

Unverified

Filling a partial magazine from loose rounds is described as loading rounds individually rather than as an instant action — which, if accurate, makes it something you do behind cover between fights rather than during one. It also makes what you buy at the vendor a real decision: spare magazines take backpack space, and so does the loose ammunition you would refill them with.

Keybinds we will not state

Unverified

Reported bindings circulate — a key to swap, a key for inventory. We are not printing them as fact. Bindings are the most likely thing to differ between a beta and a launch build, they are rebindable, and a wrong key in a guide is worse than no key at all. Check your own controls screen; when the launch build is out we will document the defaults from it.

What would settle this

Unverified

Any of three things: an official controls reference or manual, a BULKHEAD devlog describing the inventory, or our own recorded session against the launch build with the build number and date shown. Until one of those exists, no site can honestly tell you how reloading works in WARDOGS — including the ones that state it flatly.

Common questions

Why does reloading not fill my magazine?

Because, as reported, it swaps magazines rather than filling them, and each magazine keeps its own remaining rounds. Refilling from loose ammunition is described as a separate, slower action.

Is this how the launch build works?

Unknown. This is a beta report and BULKHEAD has documented none of it. Anyone presenting it as launch behaviour is guessing.

What key reloads?

We are not stating one. Bindings change between builds and are rebindable; check your controls screen.

Sources & verification

Every mechanic on this page comes from players writing up a beta build. BULKHEAD has published nothing about reloading, magazines or inventory. Treat all of it as a lead to check against your own build, not as documentation.

What the vendor screen actually sells you to reload with

The mechanic above is somebody's beta report. What it costs to carry spares for is a real, dated record.

You are here

You have just read that this page is a community report BULKHEAD has never confirmed — magazines keep their own round count, and repacking is described as a real, timed action

  1. See which calibre the guns you're loading actually takeThe same beta vendor roster that prices weapons also ties calibres like 5.56x45mm and 7.62x54mm to specific guns — worth checking before you buy spares for a gun that takes a different round.
  2. Budget for spare magazines and loose ammunition, not just the gunBoth are described here as taking their own backpack space — see the wider cash rules that purchase decision runs on.
