How big is the fight, actually?
Two published areas, drawn against each other. The Control Zone is the part of the map the match is decided in — and it is a much smaller part than the word 'zone' suggests.
256 km²
Published map area
The battlefield BULKHEAD states a match is fought across. It is the number the studio gives for the map, and it is the reason transport is a system rather than a convenience — most of this is ground nobody is fighting over at any given moment.
64 cells because 256 km² ÷ 4 km² is exactly 64. The map’s outline is not published, so the grid is an area comparison and not a map — and the Hot Zone has no published size at all.
Three maps, three variations each
BULKHEAD gave the count in its own devlog on 11 August 2026, a month before Early Access: “We are launching with 37 weapons, 21 vehicles, and three maps with each of those maps having three variations within them.” In the same breath it said that after launch the studio would be “focusing on bug fixes, keeping the devs on hand to react to major feedback points, and a new map.” So the answer to how many maps WARDOGS had at release is three, with a fourth promised and not dated. The count is spoken, not written: no Steam announcement repeats it, and the store page says only that the studio plans more maps. BULKHEAD has not said what a “variation” is.
The three maps, and where their names come from
Only one of the three names comes from BULKHEAD. Its 4 September video runs factory and rail-yard footage into a title card reading “ZESTAFONA” and then “COMING TO EARLY ACCESS SEPTEMBER 10TH”, so Zestafona is publisher-stated. Bakurani and Ozeti are not printed anywhere BULKHEAD publishes; they come from the game files, read by two independent datamines that agree with each other and with a community calculator. That is why this section is graded unverified even though the count above is not. Each map has its own page with its towers, team spawns and ground.
All three maps, with towers and team spawns →
| Map | Name from | Play area | Towers | Relief |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bakurani | Game files (two datamines) | 11.0 × 11.0 km | 5 | 1,082 m |
| Ozeti | Game files (two datamines) | 8.5 × 7.8 km | 4 | 388 m |
| Zestafona | BULKHEAD title card | 10.5 × 9.1 km | 3 | 637 m |
How to tell which map you are on
Read it off the server browser before you join. BULKHEAD’s Patch 0.11 announcement on 12 September 2026 shows both browsers, Official and Community, with the same five columns: SERVER NAME, MODE, MAP, PLAYERS and PING. The MAP column is the answer. Community servers can change it between sessions: BULKHEAD said on 8 September that admins “will be able to choose maps, lighting variants, minimum and maximum player levels or cash for you to join”, and Patch 0.11 fixed community server IDs being “wiped on map change and restart”. The Deploy button added in Update 0.1.2 chooses a kind of server — Official, Community, Infantry Mode or Low-Level — not a map, so the browser is still where the map is shown.
Why the map is 256 km² and the zone only 2 × 2 km
Because the distance is the respawn timer. BULKHEAD answered this complaint directly in the same 11 August devlog: “One of the complaints we see from players is about how long it takes to get back into the control zone after you die, blissfully unaware that this is your punishment for dying, which creates an entire value vector for alternate roles such as pilots and drivers getting you back into the action. Instead of an arbitrary respawn timer on your UI like an arcade shooter, in [WARDOGS] your respawn timer is instead based on the choices you make from spawn. Should you buy a vehicle or catch a lift?” There is no spawning on your squad either — “you can’t just respawn on your friends. You have to make your way back to them”, from its April “Early Access & Beyond” video. The arithmetic is BULKHEAD’s too: a 4 km² zone inside a 256 km² map is one sixty-fourth of it.
How far the walk back is
On all three maps, every team spawn sits 3.6–4.0 km in a straight line from the middle of that map’s tower cluster, which is where the fighting concentrates. Those distances are measured from a community calculator’s hand-placed positions, checked against two game-file datamines and rounded to 0.1 km, so they are graded unverified. They are distances, not times: nothing BULKHEAD has published gives a running speed or a vehicle’s, which is why this page does not convert one into the other. Bakurani’s figures are the Season 1 layout: BULKHEAD’s Season 02 preview says all faction spawns on Bakurani move with Season 02 on 15 October 2026.
Map controls: open, ping, mark coordinates
BULKHEAD has not published a keybinding list, so these come from press keybind tables and players, and only where at least two of them agree. On PC, M opens the tactical map and X recentres it; both sit under UI – Map Keybinds in Settings › Controls › Keybindings, per Shacknews’ launch-day table and Dexerto’s beta one. Clicking the scroll wheel pings, and holding it opens the ping wheel; middle-clicking a spot on the open map drops a white diamond marker. Right-click a spot on the map and choose Mark Coordinates, and the chat box opens with that spot’s X and Y in it — the method two player guides use to work out range, at 100 m per whole unit. The minimap zoom key is disputed: the press tables bind it to the square brackets, while two players on Steam say N cycles it.
Range between two points on the map, in metres →
- Open the tactical map: M
- Recentre the map: X
- Ping: click the scroll wheel; hold it for the ping wheel
- Mark Coordinates: right-click on the map, then copy the X/Y from chat
- Zoom the minimap: [ and ] in press tables, N according to two players — check your own keybindings
How big is a grid square?
Two sizes, depending on how far you zoom. Zoomed out, the tactical map is divided into squares of about 1 km; zoom in and a finer grid of 100 m squares appears. AllThingsHow describes both scales, a player on Steam counts squares at 100 m each to range a mortar, and metabot’s map, drawn from a live match, uses 1 km squares numbered by column and row — which on a 16 × 16 km map makes sixteen a side. One player guide says the smallest squares are 10 m, which nothing else repeats, so it is not used here. BULKHEAD has said nothing about the grid, and how its squares are labelled — numbers or letters — is also disputed between fan maps.
Will WARDOGS get more maps?
One, at least, with no date. The 11 August devlog promises “a new map” after launch, and the store’s Early Access FAQ says the studio plans to expand WARDOGS with “more maps, weapons, vehicles, and gameplay variety”. Season 02 is dated 15 October 2026, and BULKHEAD’s Update 0.1.2 notes describe it as “a larger content update, with new map conditions, equipment, balance reworks and additional features” — conditions, not a map. The official account has said rain is an additional weather state per map rather than a mid-match event. Nothing published ties the new map to Season 02, and this page will not until BULKHEAD does.
Common questions
How many maps are in WARDOGS?
Three. BULKHEAD said on 11 August 2026 that WARDOGS launches with three maps, each with three variations, and that a new map follows after launch.
What are the WARDOGS maps called?
Zestafona, Bakurani and Ozeti. BULKHEAD has put only Zestafona’s name on screen, in its 4 September 2026 video; Bakurani and Ozeti are the names in the game files, read by two datamines that agree.
How do I know which map I am on in WARDOGS?
Check the MAP column in the server browser before you join. Both the Official and Community browsers have it, and community servers can change map between sessions.
Why is the WARDOGS map so big when the Control Zone is small?
BULKHEAD says the trip back is the respawn timer: instead of a countdown, the time it takes to return depends on choices you make at spawn, like buying a vehicle or catching a lift. There is no spawning on your squad.
What key opens the map in WARDOGS?
M on PC, according to press keybind tables and players; X recentres it. Click the scroll wheel to ping. BULKHEAD has not published a keybinding list, so check Settings › Controls › Keybindings in your own client.
How big are the grid squares on the WARDOGS map?
About 1 km when zoomed out, with a finer 100 m grid when you zoom in, according to press guides and players. BULKHEAD has not published the grid.
Will WARDOGS add new maps?
BULKHEAD has promised a new map after launch without a date. Season 02, dated 15 October 2026, is described as adding new map conditions, not a new map.
Sources & verification
The count, the variations, the post-launch map, the server browser and the reason the map is large are all BULKHEAD’s own words, from its videos and Steam announcements. Zestafona’s name is a BULKHEAD title card. Bakurani and Ozeti are named by two game-file datamines that agree with each other, not by BULKHEAD, and the distances from spawn come from community map positions; both are graded unverified where they appear.
